Designing thoughtful, Small-scale Architecture

I’m Shannon Mulcahy, an architectural assistant based in South London, currently working in practice while building a freelance studio focused on residential design.

I’m passionate about conscious, intentional design - about how people live in and feel connected to the spaces they inhabit. My approach is rooted in detail, driven by your vision, and shaped by real-world practicality. After all, this is your space - and it should work for you.

I care about every aspect of a project, right down to the simple thoughts of placement of sockets. My ideal project is one where I can help you bring your ideas to life - from first thoughts to final drawings. Your perfect space.

Project 01 - The Proud Project W4

The proud project was a commercial fit out of a proposed pilates studio in the Chiswick area. This project was a commercial refurbishment on which I was involved from survey to tender drawings, including design meetings, mood-boards and material packages. This was my first full project from start to finish through all RIBA stages, a valuable learning experience and introduction to

commercial projects.

Project 02 - White Oaks

A large-scale loft and rear extension to an existing property in Woking. The client wanted to increase floor area while maintaining roofline harmony with the street. The proposal included a full loft conversion, additional bedrooms and study, a bright landing with tall glazing, and a revised entrance sequence.

I worked on the full planning set and developed design options in response to both client needs and council feedback.

Project 03 - Mind the gap

A speculative housing system designed to make use of ‘incidental spaces’ across London - unused gaps in the city caused by the ever-changing cityscape and other factors such as war damage or infrastructure. The proposal is a conceptual design from my 3rd year design project which I hold dear to me. Using steel trusses fixed to adjoining buildings allowed the site of the home to ‘hover,’ Leaving the space underneath free for use. The project focuses on modular design, light-touch foundations and urban regeneration without demolition.

ABOUT ME

I grew up looking at plans and hearing chats about the site work with my dad, a carpenter with over 40 years of experience in construction.

The early exposure to the construction industry shaped how I see design: not just artistic vision, but as something that needs to work in the real world.

It's helped me understand what makes a practical, cost-effective, and buildable design - and where architects can sometimes miss the mark.

I bring that balance into every project creative, thoughtful design that makes sense on site.
